‘Joy is one of the b

s the most important message any environmentalist can give at the moment i
s that green options are neither just a last desperate hope for saving the
planet\, nor misery maximisers that will make life less worth living.’\n
George Monbiot says of THE JOYFUL ENVIRONMENTALIST: ‘This is the joy we
need in our lives\, cutting through the despair to help us find our way in
the world’.
‘Told with humour and candour\, The Joyful Environmentalist is a manif

With great anti
cipation we welcome the brilliant playwright and author Barney Norris to r
ead from and discuss his new novel\, Undercurrant.
\n
Like much of Barney Norris’s work (his 2018 no
vel Turning
for Home and his latest play\, We Started to Sing)\, Und
ercurrent deals with beginnings and endings\, love and loss\, and bor
rows from his own family’s experience. It opens at a wedding where Ed meet
s a young woman\, Amy\, who claims he rescued her from drowning when they
were children. Ed feels the pull of something\, as does Juliet\, his girlf
riend of six years. Shortly afterwards\, they split up and he begins to se
e Amy.
\n
At first you think this is going
to be a novel about thirtysomething relationships\, lovers recognising the
“secret currents which align our lives”\, but then the focus shifts. Norr
is offers a profound meditation on dealing with loss and finding your moor
ings in destabilising times. Throughout\, he compares the ebb and flow of
life to the undercurrents of water. His writing couldn’t be more poignant\
, or necessary in today’s world.

Join us for an evening with Ellinor Michel o
n her co-authored book\, The Art and Science of the Crystal Palace Dinosau
rs. Ellinor is an evolutionary biologist\, ecologist and taxonomist at the
Natural History Museum\, London. Her work extends to palaeoclimates and s
cientific nomenclature. It was her interest in the history and philosophy
of science that led her to co-found and chair the Friends of Crystal Palac
e Dinosaurs. The Dinosaurs have been a gateway to the wondrous ideas of De
ep Time and to teaching us how scientific ideas come to life since 1854\,
she hopes this book will continue to bring those important messages to man
y generations of curious minds.
\n
The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs\
, a series of thirty-seven incredible sculptures of prehistoric animals an
d geological displays\, were unveiled to the public as part of the famous
Crystal Palace Park in 1854. The display\, which includes iconic depiction
s of monumental dinosaurs\, regal extinct mammals\, serpentine marine rept
iles and giant amphibians\, captured a snapshot of palaeontology from a go
lden era of scientific discovery in the mid-nineteenth century.
\n
Today\, they are international
ly recognised as a milestone in our portrayals of extinct life. This book
celebrates these classic scientific artworks and explores: their history\,
their conception as a wider part of the Crystal Palace project\, their ex
ecution using unorthodox building materials\, their reception by nineteent
h century and modern critics\, and their enduring mysteries. Hundreds of h
istoric and modern photos and original paintings show modern scientific vi
sions of the extinct animals restored. Written in collaboration with and i
n support of the Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs charity\, this superb
book gives the most detailed and complete history of these world-famous s
culptures yet\, reinforcing their status as masterworks of education and p
alaeoartistry.

event to celebrate the new novel from Diana Evans and the prizewinning an
d much-loved author of Ordinary People.
\n
‘Alice was thinking about her own next world and her own castle\, which
was not in Kingsbury or in Kilburn. It was far away from here\, out in the
fields near the edge of Benin City\, a little house\, long in the dreamin
g\, which her relatives had been building for her for when it was time to
go home to Nigeria. One day it would be time to go home.’
\n
After fi
fty years in the wilderness of London\, Alice wants to live out her days i
n the land of her birth. Her children are not so sure\, and in the wake of
their father’s death\, the imagined stability of the family begins to buc
kle. Youngest daughter Melissa is forging a new life but has never let go
of a love she lost. Michael too remains haunted by the failed perfection o
f the past\, even within the sturdy walls of his marriage to the sparkling
Nicole. As Alice’s final decision draws closer\, all that is hidden betwe
en Melissa and her sisters\, Michael and Nicole\, rises to the surface…Set
against the shadows of Grenfell and a country in turmoil\, Diana Evans’s
ordinary people confront fundamental questions. How should we raise our ch
ildren? How to do right by our parents? And how\, in the midst of everythi
ng\, might we satisfy ourselves?
\n
Diana is the author of the novels
26a\, The Wonder and Ordinary People. She has
received nominations for the Whitbread First Novel\, the Guardian First Bo

of the Blitz. But every day brings new scenes of devastation\, and after
yet another heartbreaking loss Charlotte has an uncanny sense of forebodin

Ian Nair
n was a British architectural critic who coined the term ‘subtopia’ for th

<
u>Concretopia: A Brutal Decade
\n
Was it really ten years ago
when John Grindrod made such a splash with his fabulous book Concretopia?
Well yes it was\, so on Thursday 23rd November\, 7.30pm join us for a uni
que evening when John reflects on the stat
e of Britain’s post-war modern buildings now\, and tells some untold tales
from the making of the book.
\n
\n
Tower Blocks
. Flyovers. Streets in the Sky.
\nOnce\, this was the future.
\n
From 1945 to 1979\, Concretopia is the story
of how blitzed\, slum-ridden and crumbling ‘austerity Britain’ became\, i
n a few short years\, a space-age world of concrete\, steel and glass. Pre
fabs\, the Festival of Britain\, the blitz rebuilding of Coventry and Plym
outh\, the new towns of Cwmbran\, Harlow\, Cumbernauld and Milton Keynes\,
the rise of brutalism\, Park Hill in Sheffield\, high rise flats in the G
orbals and Newcastle\, Arndale centres\, the Bull Ring in Birmingham\, Cen
tre Point and Space House by Richard Seifert\, Span and New Ash Green\, th
e Poulson and T Dan Smith scandal\, Ronan Point\, the Barbican and the Nat
ional Theatre.
\n
‘Never has a trip from Croydon and back again been
so fascinating. John Grindrod’s witty and informative tour of Britain is a
total treat\, and will win new converts to stare in awe (or at least enli
ghtened comprehension) at Crap towns and Boring Postcards . . .’
\nCATHERINE CROFT\, Director\, Twentieth Century Society
\n
‘Charming . . . Concretopia could pleasingly be read by anyo
ne in Britain who lives in a postwar Modernist structure and has a love-ha
te relationship with it. Part-travelogue\, part-history\, Grindrod’s accou
nt walks us through in touchingly precise detail the decisions that led to
such buildings as the BT Tower\, the Barbican\, Coventry Cathedral and th
e blocks of New Ash . . . We don’t think of architectural beauty as key to
well-being and yet\, as this book shows us\, it profoundly is.’
\nALAIN DE BOTTON\, THE TIMES
\n
‘Concretop
ia is almost certainly the first history of the post-war modernist pr
oject in British cities and towns\, and it is without doubt the first to t
ry and address a non-architectural\, non-specialist audience … [It’s] abou
t the best history of the intersection of post-war architecture and politi
cs (often with a small “p”) that you could hope for – personal\, erudite\,
even-handed and driven by a subtle\, but still present underlying anger a
t the dismantling of the Welfare State under the dubious banner of “auster
ity”.’

Recently\, with his new role at th

Join us for an evening with John Rogers in conversation wit
h Travis Elborough about his new book\, Welcome to New London – Journeys and Encounters in the Post-Olympic City.<
/p>\nIn Welcome to New London John Rogers invites us t
o join him on a captivating voyage through the ever-changing landscapes an
d communities of this iconic city. As a follow-up to This Other Lo
ndon\, the story begins in 2013 as the Olympic village in Stratfo
rd transitioned to become a new permanent settlement\, and the Stratford C
ity plan became a reality. This excursion sparks an exploration of the Oly
mpic Park and its surrounding areas\, where a wave of development is resha
ping the Lower Lea Valley.
The narrative seamlessl
y weaves through various facets of London’s transformation\, from the Focu
s E15 Mothers’ occupation of homes on Carpenters Estate\, a poignant symbo
l of the housing crisis\, to the global attention garnered by campaigns li
ke Save Soho and Save Tin Pan Alley. The book also chronicles the author’s
involvement in efforts to help residents of the Sweets Way Estate and oth
er housing campaigns\, offering readers an intimate look at the human stor
ies behind London’s changing landscape.
\nIntriguingly\, Rogers delv
es into the city’s ancient history following a chance conversation with a
Pearly Punk King on the rooftop of the old Foyles building. This encounter
takes him through Epping Forest to the prehistory of London in the Upper
Lea Valley\, unearthing Bronze Age burial mounds and their significance in
understanding London’s historical roots and its enduring connection to it
s past. Rogers embarks on a series of walks with acclaimed writer Iain Sin
clair\, providing a thought-provoking commentary on London’s future. And t
hen\, somehow\, the United Nations sent him to Peckham to explore the conc
ept of the ‘Open City\,’ tying together the book’s themes and returning to
the Olympic Park as a focal point.
\nWelcome to New London<
/strong> is not just a book about a city\; it’s a vivid\, personal account
of a city in flux\, where the author’s passion for exploration and his co
mmitment to bearing witness to change converge.
\nOur host for the e
vening\, Travis Elborough\, is described by The Guardian as ‘one of the co
untry’s finest pop culture historians’. Travis has been a freelance writer
\, author\, broadcaster and cultural commentator for over two decades now
and his well-loved books include Wish You Were Here: England on Sea\, T
he Long-Player Goodbye\, a hymn to vinyl records that inspired the BBC
4 documentary When Albums Ruled the World\, Through the Looking

CHRIST ON A BIKE by Orla Owen
\nCerys receives a
n unexpected inheritance but there are rules attached. Three simple rules
that must be followed. As she settles into her new life\, she begins to fe
el trapped: the past is ever-present. She convinces herself that the villa
gers are watching her and\, desperate to control her own future\, she trie
s to break free…
\n‘Black Mirror meets Tales of The Unexpected with
shades of Shirley Jackson.’ – Nina Pottell – Prima Magazine.
\nSPENT LIGHT by Lara Pawson
\n
A woman contemplates her ha
nd-me-down toaster and suddenly the whole world erupts into her kitchen\,
in all its brutality and loveliness: global networks of resource extractio
n and forced labour\, technologies of industrial murder\, histories of gen
ocide\, alongside traditions of craft\, the pleasures of convenience and d
exterity\, the giving and receiving of affection and care.
\n
“Everyt
hing in this damned world calls for indignation\,” the woman says at one p
oint. All of it’s there\, all interconnected\, and she can’t stop looking.
The likeness between a pepper mill and a hand grenade\, for example\, or
the scarcely hidden violence of an egg timer. What if objects knew their o
wn histories? What if we could allow ourselves to see those weird resonanc
es\, echoes\, loops\, glitches\, as Pawson does so beautifully and unnervi

tihero of his bestselling Mr Gum series to his penchant for absurdist plot
s and outrageous wordplay\, his books are anything but formulaic. Saying t
his\, please note this event is for Andy’s grown up book ‘Benny The Blue W
hale’ and suitable for adults only.
\n
When a friend introduces him t
o ChatGPT\, the new large language chatbot\, Andy is as sceptical as he is
curious. Can this jumble of algorithms really emulate the spontaneity of
human thought? Could it one day replace human authors like him for good? A
nd are we soon to be ruled over by despotic robot overlords? He decides th
ere’s only one thing for it – he must test this bot’s capabilities. Eventu
ally\, he settles on a prompt that will push the algorithm to its creative
limits:
\n
Tell me a story about a blue whale with a tiny penis<
/em>
\n
Chaos ensues.
\n
What follows is a surprising and illumi
nating battle between Andy and ChatGPT that maybe\, just maybe\, might hel
p us all understand AI a little bit better. Andy’s new book\, ‘Benny the
Blue Whale’ presents his prompts and the AI-generated narrative alongside
an extensive and entertaining commentary which provides a startling paean
to the art of a good story and the boundlessness of human creativity. Seri
ous and profane\, hopeful and hilarious\, join us for what will be nothing
short of entertaining when Andy discusses ‘Benny the Blue Whale’\, which
provides a joyfully anarchic meditation on AI\, literature and why we writ
e in the first place.

I SEE BUILDINGS FALL LIKE LIGH
TNING is a moving and lyrical novel about five friends whose lives are sha
ped by the brutality of a world that doesn’t value them – and the very dif
ferent choices they make. Patrick\, Shiv\, Rian\, Oli and Conor grew up to
gether. They played together\, skipped school together\, and dreamt of eve
rything they’d do with their lives. Now they are thirty\, and only Rian ha

doesn’t stop him clinging to a vision of the past that is quickly slippin
g away. Oli is fading by the day\, drinking and snorting his way through t
he endless boredom\, while Conor has a baby on the way and a business plan
he hopes will change everything. Patrick and Shiv are as in love as ever\
, but even they are rocked when an old secret opens up new wounds…Bold\, a
mbitious and stylistically striking\, I See Buildings Fall like Lightning
asks what happens when all the things we expect from our lives end up… not
happening. It lays bare the ways that place and circumstance shape us\, e
xplores the redeeming and transforming beauty of friendship and examines t
he true limits of hope and forgiveness. Praise for Hourglass: ‘This book g
lows in the heart of the reader’ Max Porter ‘This book is such a sneaky he
